2017 Sauvignon Blanc Clear Lake
Clear Lake AVA is named after the largest body of freshwater in California, which moderates temperatures in the surrounding vineyards. Rolling hillsides, diverse volcanic soils, and a stable atmosphere allows the grapes to retain acidity while remaining distinctly sweet and refreshing. These conditions make Clear Lake the perfect place for growth of its most popular wine grapes, Sauvignon Blanc.
The Clear Lake appellation -- just north of Sonoma and Napa counties and east of Mendocino contains the largest body of fresh water in California. The lake acts as a temperature moderator and covers half the surface area of this viticultural region. Uniformly cooler than any northern California appellation, Clear Lake AVA has become well known for producing bright, aromatic white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc. The rich soils of Clear Lake produce more than just grapes, and in spring months sprout a wide array of wildflowers including California’s state flower, the dazzling orange poppy.
Delicate and refined, this Sauvignon Blanc features a medley of aromas and flavor including pear, melon, and citrus mingled with floral notes of orange blossoms and rose petals. Lighter in body with crisp acidity lead to a refreshingly pleasant finish with tropical complexities.
Crisp and aromatic, with lots of citrus and grassy flavors, Sauvignon Blanc is universally food-friendly, excelling beside seafood, chicken, and moderately spicy dishes. Sauvignon Blanc's bright acidity and herbal aromas also make it a great choice with green salads (try a little goat cheese on there) and vegetarian dishes. Sauvignon Blanc is one of the few wines that can endure asparagus and raw tomatoes. It also likes dishes that are prepared with herbs, particularly cilantro and parsley.
